Your inner flame gives you a fixed amount of time inside the Shroud, shown as a countdown while you are standing in it. Normal white fog drains it steadily, while the red deadly Shroud drains it far faster, so treat red areas as off-limits until you upgrade your flame. Destroying Shroud Roots and clearing Elixir Wells both extend the time you get, and an Hourglass Capsule adds roughly seventy percent to your current budget. Step into clear air at any point and the timer stops draining.

There are no locked classes, only a talent tree with three branches: Warrior, Ranger and Mage. Each branch holds four specialisations — Warrior, Tank, Barbarian and Athlete on the red branch, Assassin, Ranger, Beastmaster and Survivor on the green one, and Trickster, Wizard, Healer and Battlemage on the blue one. You can spend points in any branch at any time, so hybrid builds like a battlemage or a wand-and-shield bruiser are fully supported. The Flame Altar lets you reset the whole tree for one Rune per spent point if a spread stops working.

You can only build permanently inside the radius of a Flame Altar. Anything constructed outside that radius is treated as temporary and resets after roughly thirty minutes or when the server restarts, so the first job in any new region is planting an altar. Upgrading the flame with Shroud Cores and later Shroud Nexus widens the buildable cube from forty to one hundred and sixty blocks per side, raises the number of altars you can keep active and pushes the deadly Shroud further from your walls. Each altar also works as a fast-travel point and a respec station.

Most recipes are gated behind a rescued craftsperson rather than a level. Manual crafting works anywhere and can pull materials straight out of nearby magic chests, which means early gear never requires a trip home. Rescuing the Blacksmith opens the kiln, forge and smelter chain, the Alchemist handles spells and reagents, the Carpenter unlocks building and furniture, and the Farmer's kitchen line turns crops into combat buffs. Ore tiers follow the regions: copper and clay appear in Revelwood, higher metals wait in the Nomad Highlands and beyond.

Boss fights reward patience over damage. Every named enemy belongs to one of four factions and carries damage type resistances, so matching your weapon and spell elements to the target matters more than raw stats. Filling the stun bar through parries, heavy attacks and shock damage opens an Overpowered state where a Merciless Attack deals heavy damage, and parrying a projectile sends it straight back. Learning the two or three attacks that actually threaten you and dodging those, rather than trading hits, is how the Hollow Halls guardians stop being walls.

A single Enshrouded world supports up to sixteen players online, and single-player works exactly the same way with nobody else invited. Enemy health pools scale with the size of the party, so a four-player group does not simply melt content that solo players struggle with. There is no forced sharing of loot or progression, which means a friend can join your world, help clear a region and keep everything they picked up. The 1.0 update also added Sparkworks and Adventure Sharing, so a finished base can be published as a playable dungeon.
